Tradiția spune că întemeierea orașului s-a realizat în vremea lui Bucur, pe care unii îl cred cioban, alții pescar, boier, haiduc. Prima consemnare în scris a acestei tradiții este cea din 1761, a călugărului franciscan Blasius Kleiner.
